As of 1 August, 2015 penal institutions contain 649,5 thousand persons, including:
528,6 thousand persons in 729 penal colonies;
32,4 thousand convicts in 127 colonies-settlements;
1919 inmates in 6 colonies for life sentenced persons;
117,5 thousand persons in 218 pretrial detention centers;
1,7 thousand persons in 8 prisons;
2,1 thousand persons in 46 juvenile correctional facilities.
52,8 thousand women are serving their sentences, among them: 42,4 thousand offenders serve their sentences in penal colonies and in the medical correctional institutions; 10,4 thousand in pre-detention centers. Penal colonies for women include 13 children’s homes, where live 763 children.
Medical care of the offenders and detainees is provided by 136 hospitals of different types as well as by medical units or dispensaries in each penal institution, 59 medical treatment penal institutions for inmates suffering from TB, 9 medical treatment penal institutions for drug addicts.
The penal system also includes:
2408 penal inspections with 339,5 thousand persons sentenced to non-custodial sanctions and 2 858 persons under house arrest;
7 state unitary enterprises of penal institutions, 566 labour adjustment centres for convicted persons, 80 industrial workshops.
Attached to penal and educational colonies there are 325 educational institutions and 522 their branches, 307 federal public professional education institutions, 555 Orthodox churches, 60 mosques, 10 buddhist temples, 3 Catholic churches, 704 prayer-rooms.
Some 295,9 thousand persons work in the penal system, 225,2 thousand persons among them are officers (and 6,6 thousand persons are non-permanent workers).
Medical service of the penal staff is provided by 127 public health institutions, including 51 centers of medical and social rehabilitation, 8 hospitals, 68 military medical commissions and 3 health centers.
Attached to the penal system there are 7 institutions of higher professional education with 1 branch, 3 advanced training institute, 29 training centers, the research institute of the penal system, the research institute of information technologies.
There is a publishing house editing magazines “Crime and Punishment”, “Gazette of the Penal System”, newspaper “Public House (Prison)”.
